Infinix Zero 5G - Fantastic Phone

Infinix Zero 5G - Fantastic Phone

Infinix has recently gained a lot of popularity because of its fantastic mid-range phones like the Infinix Note 11 Pro and Zero X Pro. The Chinese Transsion Holdings company has acquired a substantial market share in Africa and South Asia with sibling businesses Tecno and Itel and has been looking to expand its global reach.

Infinix Zero 5G - Fantastic Phone

Following up on our review of the Zero X Pro, which we thought was a great deal, we now get to look at the Zero 5G, Infinix's first 5G phone. The Infinix Zero 5G comes with a 120Hz 6.78-inch LCD, a large 5,000 mAh battery, and a stylish "uni-curve" design.

Infinix's range has been a little confused lately, but the short version is that "Zero" is the company's flagship family, which is pretty counterintuitive. Despite being the company's first 5G handset, the Zero 5G is a low-ranking member of the family. It's a little better than the Zero X Neo, but it's nowhere near as well-equipped as the Infinix Zero X and Zero X Pro without the chipset. Even the less expensive Infinix Note 11 Pro outperforms the Zero 5G with stereo speakers, a larger display, and a higher-resolution main camera.

However, since performance and connectivity are undoubtedly the two most crucial components of current smartphones, the Infinix Zero 5G could have a hidden gem. The MediaTek Dimensity 900 is a significant step forward for the company, which had previously relied on MediaTek G processors.

Infinix chose fast UFS 3.1 storage and LPDDR5X RAM to complement it, boosting its capabilities.

2- Unboxing:

When it comes to accessories, Infinix is liberal. This isn't a regular sight in today's smartphone market. With a two-piece construction and a robust and solid cardboard cradle for the phone on the inside, the retail box for the Zero 5G is quite substantial and sturdy. The rest of the accessories are packaged in plastic, which is not the most environmentally friendly option. It's a little niggle, but these things easily grow out of hand, and we hope Infinix would reconsider and go with more cardboard instead.

A 33W charger is included in the box. It has a 5V@2A or 10W@3.3A rating, as well as a short yet durable USB Type-A to Type-C cable. To accommodate the way Infinix has its 33W charging set up, you'll probably want to keep it or only replace it with other 5A-marked cables.

3- Design:

The design of the Infinix Zero 5G is unique, especially around the camera island.

The way the back surface curls and slopes onto the camera assembly, immediately reminds me of the Oppo Find X3. While Infinix was able to closely mimic the appearance of the significantly more expensive Oppo, it was unable to match the Find X3's build quality due to its plastic construction.

6.78" 120Hz LCD

On paper, the Infinix Zero 5G has a good display. It sports a 6.78-inch display with FullHD (1080 x 2460 pixels) native resolution, which translates to a very good 388 PPI density at that size. It can also refresh at a rate of 120Hz, which is fantastic.

4- XOS 10 on top of Android 11:

Infinix has its Android skin, XOS, which has seen several versions over the years. There are so many that keeping track of them all is challenging. Our Infinix Note 10 Pro came with XOS 7.6, whilst the Note 11 Pro came with XOS 8 and was later updated to XOS 10.

The Zero X Pro and the Zero 5G both come with identical XOS 10 out of the box. All of the XOS versions, however, are based on Android 11. There's also no word yet on a possible Android 12 release.

5- Camera:

On the back of the Infinix Zero 5G, there is an unusual triple camera configuration. These days, a dedicated 2x telephoto snapper on a cheap handset is uncommon.

Infinix chose this option over an ultrawide, which is the considerably more popular option.

A dedicated telephoto camera with PDAF is a 13MP 50mm device.

It, like the Infinix Note 11 Pro, has a Samsung ISOCELL S5K3L6 sensor with a 1/3.1" sensor size and 1.12m individual pixels, as well as an F/2.5 lens.

The GalaxyCore gc02m1b 2MP depth sensor is a GalaxyCore model. The 16MP selfie camera has an f/2.0 aperture and a 16MP resolution.

The sensor is a Hynix hi1631q.

There is no autofocus on it. The selfie setup on the Note 11 Pro and Note 10 Pro is nearly identical.

6- Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • The body is made of solid and durable plastic. Easily recognizable design.
  • Support for dual SIM cards and True Dual 5G SIM (5G SA + 5G SA) standby, as well as VoNR. 13 5G bands are supported (X6715 model).
  • Long battery life and rapid charging at 33W.
  • XOS10 is jam-packed with features and personalization possibilities.
  • With current features and connections, the Mediatek Dimensity 900 5G is an outstanding all-around performer. It's a step above Infinix's normal MediaTek G-series CPUs.
  • In the daytime, the 2x telephoto performs admirably. Selfies are fantastic, and you get a selfie flash with an LED for low-light situations. The main and selfie cameras both perform admirably in low light, especially when using Super Night mode.
  • Good 2x 1080p clips from the telephoto and solid 4K clips from the main cam. It's a good video with a lot of stability. Selfie videos in 4K are of excellent quality.
  • FM radio, 3.5mm jack, microSD card slot

Cons:

  • There is no protection against ingress. On the front of the protective glass, there is no word.
  • Horizon Blue and Cosmic Black are both slick and accumulate a lot of fingerprints.
  • The volume rockers are mushy and squishy.
  • The display has a low maximum brightness, poor color accuracy, and a slow pixel reaction time, which causes smearing.
  • On Netflix, Google Widevine L3 DRM implies no HD and greater quality streaming.
  • No stereo or hybrid speaker arrangement, only a single bottom-firing speaker with acceptable performance.
  • The XOS 10 operating system is still based on Android 11. It comes with a lot of junk pre-installed, and some of the menus are disorganized.
  • In half of the daytime images, the main camera has an obnoxious color tinge. The telephoto lens has erratic autofocus, isn't a macro camera, and struggles in low light.
  • Despite their marketing, both cameras produce poor portraits.
  • There is no NFC.

Conclusion:

There is no denying that the Infinix Zero 5G is a fantastic phone. It boasts high-performance chipsets, a good camera, a good battery, and a good screen, but there are no major software updates planned.

It can be tough to purchase a phone if you don't have a software update master plan.
