Asus ZenBook 13 - Amazing OLED Display

The Asus ZenBook 13 is a seriously light, powerful, and bright ultraportable notebook with the latest AMD Ryzen processors and a stunning HD OLED display, but its Radeon graphics can't compete with Intel's Iris Xe, and it makes some terrible port sacrifices.

The Asus ZenBook 13 is back for 2021, with the latest AMD Ryzen 5000 series processors and a full HD OLED panel for gorgeous, vibrant colors and outstanding CPU performance, but its Radeon graphics don't quite match what Intel Iris Xe can do, and the lack of Thunderbolt 4 support and a headphone jack keeps it from being truly great.

That isn't to say it isn't one of the best Ultrabooks available right now; it most certainly is. This is one of the best-looking ultrabooks available, aside from the Dell XPS 13 and Apple MacBook Air (M1,2020), thanks to its excellent design and lightweight chassis as well as its bright and vibrant 400-nit OLED display. It's also a lot lighter than both of them, with the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano being the lightest of the bunch.

In terms of performance, AMD Ryzen 5000-series CPUs are among the best multitasking CPUs available, easily handling schoolwork, work, or simply loading up on multiple Google Chrome tabs (having 16GB RAM helps as well). The ZenBook 13 falters a little when it comes to GPU performance, where the AMD Radeon graphics are capable but fall short of Intel's Iris Xe integrated graphics.

2- Design:

One of the Asus ZenBook 13's most distinctive aspects is its appearance. 

With a thickness of 0.55 inches (13.9 mm) and a weight of only 2.51 pounds (1.14kg), this Ultrabook is extremely light.

The brushed metal pattern on the lid radiates out from the Asus logo stamped off-center on the front of the aluminum chassis. It's not a work of art by any means, but it's also not something you'd be embarrassed to wear in public.

Because the speakers are down-firing, this is especially true. 

As a result, placing the ZenBook 13 on anything other than a firm, flat surface may cause the sound to be muffled. 

There are (two USB Type-C ports), (one USB Type-A port), an (HDMI 2.0 output port), and a microSD slot when it comes to ports. You'll notice that there's no headphone jack, which we'd have preferred to see instead of a microSD card slot.

We wouldn't call this a "creative workstation," thus the media slot, which is typically used for images or recorded audio, isn't going to see as much use as a headphone port.

Given their arrangement, they aren't the worst laptop speakers we've ever heard. During our HD movie test, the speakers alone at 50% level were able to adequately fill a small studio apartment.

Here are the results of our benchmark tests on the Asus ZenBook 13:

• PCMark 10 (Home): 5,963.
• 3DMark (Night Raid): 13,305.
• (Firestrike): 3,277.
• (Time Spy): 1,306.
• (Blender Fishy Cat): 7 minutes.
• (Classroom): 13 minutes.
• (Battery Life) PCMark 10 test: 13 hours 50 minutes.
• (Battery Life) TechRadar movie test: 9 hours 9 minutes.

The Asus ZenBook 13's performance is a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, its multicore performance easily outperforms competitive Intel Core i7 CPUs like the i7-1165G7, however, it falls short in single-core performance.

This is characteristic of AMD chips, which are stronger at multitasking than Intel CPUs but fall short in applications that require more single-core power, like gaming or video encoding. Fortunately, on an Ultrabook like the ZenBook 13, you're unlikely to do much of the latter, thus multicore performance is more relevant for everyday use and productivity work.

The GPU performance of the ZenBook 13 is another area where it falls short. AMD Radeon integrated graphics have gone a long way, but they still can't match Intel Iris Xe's performance. The Ryzen 7 5800U in the XPS 13 and Razer Book 13 performed substantially worse in our 3DMark benchmarks than the i7-1165G7.

4- Battery life:

The Asus ZenBook 13's battery life was among the best we've seen in an Ultrabook that wasn't powered by an ARM chip, and even then, the ZenBook 13 outlasted the MacBook Air (M1) by a couple of hours in our HD movie test, lasting nine hours and nine minutes to the Air's 11 hours and 15 minutes.

The ZenBook 13 averaged nearly 14 hours (13:50) in our PCMark10 battery test, with the shortest run lasting 11 hours 30 minutes and the longest run lasting 16 hours 23 minutes. The ZenBook 13 falls just short of the XPS 13, lasting 11 hours 30 minutes vs 11 hours 47 minutes in the worst situation, and nearly five hours longer in the best case.

Needless to say, this is a fantastic result, albeit it's not surprising given the ZenBook 13's larger 67WHr battery.

5- Webcam and microphone:

In terms of webcams, the Asus ZenBook 13's 720p HD webcam is quite normal. We'd want to see a better camera in 2020, given how much they've become a part of everyone's lives, but the ZenBook 13 isn't the only offender in this area. Thankfully, there is a privacy setting that will turn off the camera. Although it is not a physical shutter, it is preferable to have no switch at all.

During meetings, the microphone quality was generally outstanding, and our colleagues could hear us. We also performed many job interviews that went off without a hitch.

• Extremely long battery life

Cons:

• There is no headphone jack
• Radeon graphics fall short.
