Dell XPS 8940 - Excellent Performance

The Dell XPS 8940 is just the gaming PC I'm looking for. 

It's compact, silent, simple, and economical, and it's loaded with all of the components you'll need to keep up with the latest games.

This isn't the kind of machine you'd buy if you wanted to tweak every graphics option to the limit. Instead, it's the kind of machine that would look right at home in even the most formal office, yet still packs enough punch to play your favorite games after hours. 

The Dell XPS 8940 strikes the perfect balance between work and pleasure in an era where working from home is more frequent (and important) than ever before.

Even the most expensive versions of the XPS 8940, however, may feel inadequate when compared to competitive gaming setups. 

Even if you splurge for the fancy Blu-ray upgrade, its storage options aren't great for gaming, and its disc drive feels like an afterthought. 

At times, I wondered if the XPS 8940's resemblance to an office PC was due to a lack of confidence in its components.

2- Design:

It feels strange to praise the Dell XPS 8940 for its physical appearance. 

After all, prebuilt gaming PCs are usually tucked away in nooks and crannies, or even on the floor; they're not exactly conversation starters. 

The XPS 8940's unobtrusive appearance, on the other hand, is a strength, not a flaw. It's not a drab black box, but it's also not a bloated modern art installation. 

It resembles a conventional business PC in appearance, which means it will fit practically anywhere.

To begin with, the XPS 8940 is compact, despite its strong components. 

The device's overall dimensions are 14.5 x 12.1 x 6.7 inches, allowing it to fit comfortably on even the smallest of workstations.

The front has a lovely crosshatch pattern that also serves as ventilation; the back has a variety of openings, and the sides are plain plastic. 

The system comes with a black or white chassis, both of which look great.

3- Gaming performance:

The Dell XPS 8940 performs admirably in games, especially when viewed on a QHD monitor. 

In terms of numbers, it falls somewhere in the middle of the prebuilt gaming PC pack. 

In other words, for the price, it performs exactly as it should.

We compared the XPS 8940 to the Dell Alienware Aurora R11 and the Corsair One i200 for this review. 

The former is much more expensive and powerful than the XPS 8940, but it gives you a good idea of what the XPS 8940 can do in comparison to a premium gaming PC. 

In contrast, the latter, like the XPS 8940, is a hybrid gaming/productivity model.

The XPS 8940 was tested by measuring frame rates (in frames per second) in a variety of popular games at 1080p and 4K resolutions, with graphics, turned up to "Ultra" presets. 

The three machines were compared as follows:

In general, the XPS 8940 was not as powerful as the Aurora R11, but it was comparable to the One i200. The frame rates of the XPS 8940 were good on their terms, though. 

At 1080p resolution, every game topped 60 frames per second, and at 4K, every game above 30 frames per second – not bad for a midrange system. 

(Anything above 60 frames per second is ideal, anything below 30 frames per second can be damaging to gameplay).

4- Software:

The XPS 8940 comes with a few system tools, McAfee antivirus, and not much else, as do most Dell PCs. 

The utility system updaters, mobile phone connections, a DVD player, and so forth aren't worth fussing about, but they're also not worth utilizing. 

(Interestingly, while the Dell Cinema app provides a one-stop-shop for all your streaming providers, it excludes content from the system's own DVD/Blu-ray player.)

It's worth noting, though, that McAfee is still as obtrusive and ineffective as ever, continuously asking for more money while performing no better than Windows Defender. 

Unless you already have a subscription, simply uninstall this one. 

5- Verdict:

The Dell XPS 8940 pulled off a clever ruse: It got me thinking about why Alienware machines have to be so large and loud. 

Sure, Alienware systems are more powerful, but the XPS 8940 crams a lot of power into a tiny, dignified, and quiet design. 

It's not "cool", but would you rather brag about your gaming PC or the games it can play?

I don't believe the XPS 8940 outperforms the Corsair Vengeance i7200 in a similar price bracket. 

However, the Vengeance i7200 is primarily a gaming system, whilst the XPS 8940 is more of a hybrid. 

The amount of work you have to do and the number of games you have to play will determine which one you prefer.

The Dell XPS 8940 isn't the most powerful gaming desktop on the market, but its affordable price and attractive design set it apart.

6- Pros and Cons:

Pros:

• Compact and quiet design.
• A large number of ports.
• Excellent performance.
• Disk drive for physical media.

Cons:

• There are no particularly powerful setups.
• Storage choices are limited.

Conclusion:

Dell XPS 8940 is the gaming PC you are looking for.

It's compact, quiet, simple, economical, and loaded with all the components you'll need to keep up with the latest games.

Great for photo and video editors or designs that require a powerful PC, this desktop comes with an impressive set of front-end connections.
